EU CARBON BORDER ADJUSTMENT MECHANISM

FROM REPORTING TO VERIFICATION

What is CBAM and how does it affect me ?

CBAM is a new regulation of the European Union that will impose a carbon price on certain imported goods. After the first two quarterly reports, where the focus was on submitting data through the CBAM-Registry, actual data collection at installation level to identify the specific embedded emissions will become relevant.

Importers to Europe will have to use actual data from the installations for the specific embedded emissions (SEE) calculation for the next reports.

The transitional period started October 1st 2023 and extends to 31 December 2025. If you are importing in Europe any of the covered items under the regulation iron and steel, aluminium, cement, fertilizers, hydrogen and electricity you will have to submit a quarterly report on:

a. Total quantity of each type of goods specified for each installation producing the goods in the country of origin.
b. Total embedded emissions.
c. Total indirect emissions.
d. Carbon price in the country of origin considering any available rebates.

Installations will now be primarily responsible to collect real on-site data for the upcoming CBAM-Reports.
Verification of the CBAM report will happen at their level.

The transitional period starts 1 October 2023 and extends to 31 December 2025. If you are producing any of the covered items under the regulation [iron and steel, aluminium, cement, fertilizers, hydrogen, electricity] importers of your produced goods will require certain information on embodied greenhouse gases from you. You have the chance to establish a reporting system that will at a later stage be submitted to the CBAM registry where the importers (authorized declarants) can acess that information:

b. Total embedded emissions.
c. Total indirect emissions.
d. Carbon price paid considering any available rebates.
